About Jean Charles Joseph Chartier
When the 1900 census was taken, John Chartier was a boarder in the home of Harry Crutchett in Chester Township (Douglas), South Dakota. The census says he is single and is a drug clerk. When the 1910 census was taken, this family was living in Forbes Village (Dickey), North Dakota. J.C.J. Chartier was a druggist. In August of 1913 Harriet filed for divorce from Jean (John) Chartier. She actually had left John 3-1/2 to 4 years earlier and within that time period she had no contact or support from him. When John-Charles-Joseph Chartier registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sept. 1918, he was living at 50 Golden Gate Drive in San Francisco. He was a pharmacist at Wakeleys Pharmacy, Inc. at 101 Powell St. in San Francisco. He said his nearest relative was Mary Emma Chartier which probably is his wife. When the 1920 California census was taken, John and his daughter, Anna M. Chartier, age 3-1/2 are found as lodgers in the home of Harry E. Bradley at 638 North Bradley in Pasadena Township, Los Angeles County. John’s occupation was listed as a Druggist Clerk. John was a druggist in Trent, SD before he took off for parts unknown. The 1920 census says John is widowed which would indicate that Anne’s mother had died. In the 1930 census Jean-Charles is living at 285 Unison Street in Seattle, Washington as Charles J. Chartier with a wife “Harriet A. Chartier”. She was 47 and born in Ohio. “Charles” was a “pharmacist” in a drug store. His daughter, Ann was living with her aunt and uncle, Fred and Evelyn Hazelton in Tacoma (Pierce), Washington. John’s first wife, Harriet Mae Hubbard married Albert Lewis Brown in Clark County, South Dakota on 16 Dec 1915.
