About Jean (Jene) Smith

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=31250726

Robert Smith and Jean (Jene) Moor grew up on adjacent homesteads and after being married they lived on the lower place where their ten children were born. They bought the Smith tract from his two brothers, John and William, on May 16, 1807. The Moor estate was purchased from heirs. Jean was a business-like woman and did practically all of the business for the family going to market every week to see her regular customers. When the roads were impassable she walked to Pittsburgh and carried her market basket. Pittsburgh Town as it was called then, could only be reached by fording or by ferry. When the ferry was not running on account of the river being frozen she would walk on the ice, sometimes with freezing water running one or two inches over it. The ice at times so weak it give way under her weight.

Early one morning before daylight and before Pittsburgh had street lights, she was walking along in the dark and fell into a cellar-way which had been left open. She broke or dislodged her hip from which she was crippled for life.

  • Biography information supplied in part through the Robert Smith Family Association and the family book "Genealogy of the Descendants of Robert Smith". There is so much more to Jean's story that can be found in this book on pages 37-40. We are decendents.

Jean's first name is spelled Jene on her gravestone marker.

Jean (Jene) Smith is buried with her husband Robert Smith II. To the right of Robert's gravestone are several small gravestones of infants who were born to William and Sarah Smith. William was the 9th child born to Robert and Jean Smith. William and Sarah lost seven of their ten children in infancy.

To the left of Jene (Jean) Smith's gravestone is a gravestone with the name Polly. Sources say that Polly's marker is unreadable except for her name. Robert and Jean did have a daughter named Polly but her actual name was Mary and she is buried in the Melrose Cemetery, PA as Mary Smith Lesnett. The Polly buried here may have been a child of William and Sarah Smith?
