About Jean René Gauguin

Jean-René Gauguin, the son of the famous French painter Paul Gauguin and his Danish wife Mette Gad, was a Danish sculptor and a staunch Socialist. A spectacular china fountain that he created stands in the Tuileries in Paris.

Gauguin spent most of his life in Denmark. He produced at least four life- size sculptures of sporting male figures between 1921-1936: ‘Puglist. Standing naked man’, 1922, 'Boxer’, 1924, Diskoskaster, 1926-7, and Fodboldspillere (Football Players), 1936. It is not yet known how many versions of the Diskoskaster were made, which raises the possibility that this powerful painted plaster figure may be the original maquette from which the bronze was conceived.

The Bronze: The Diskoskaster was at Arhus Stadion in 1927, then Riisvangens Stadion in 1948.

After moving to Copenhagen at the age of 3 with his mother and siblings, Gauguin became a Danish citizen in 1909. In 1924, he competed in the Summer Olympics art competition with his piece, Boxer. He won the bronze medal for Denmark that year.

Other pieces by Jean Rene Gauguin include the China fountain at Tuileries and A Satyr Kissing a Nymph.

A good place to learn more about Jean Rene Gauguin is in Ruth Hamilton’s autobiography, The Hamilton Saga. She spent time with Jean Rene Gauguin while he was still alive and she considered him a great artist.
