About Jean Francois Trepagnier, II
In 1811, the largest slave uprising in North American history was launched at Woodland Plantation in present-day LaPlace, and swept downriver, intended for New Orleans. Jean Francois Trepagnier refused to abandon his home, Myrtleland Plantation, and was murdered and chopped to pieces. The family, in time, abandoned the home, and it was razed in 1957. His named is recalled in Bayou Trepagnier, which was once an important trade route for upriver farmers returning from the markets of New Orleans.
