Biography
Jeanne was the daughter of the British actress Lillie Langtry, the "Jersey Lily", although the identity of her father is unclear. In April 1879, her mother, Lillie started an affair with Prince Louis of Battenberg, although she was also involved with Arthur Clarence Jones, an old friend. Prince Louis later became the father of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India, and grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In June 1880, Lillie became pregnant. Her husband, Edward Langtry, was definitely not the father; however, she led Prince Louis to believe that it was he. Lillie was given some money by the Prince of Wales, another former lover, and she retired to Paris with Arthur Jones. On March 8, 1881, she gave birth to Jeanne Marie.
The discovery of Langtry's passionate letters to Arthur Jones in 1878 and their publication by Laura Beatty in 1999 support the idea that Jones was the father. Still, Prince Louis's son, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, had always maintained that his father was the father of Jeanne Marie.
