Jeduthan Harper "Jed" Lindsay was the second of six children, and first son, born to Robert Lindsay, Jr. (1776-1818) and Letitia Harper (1785-1835). He was named for his paternal grandfather, Lt. Col. Jeduthan Harper, of Randolph County, NC, a soldier of the Revolution. His paternal grandparents were Judge Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1801) and Ann "Nancy" McGee (1753/4-1832).
Jeduthan and his brother Jesse Lindsay (1808-1886) were influential in the development of the city of Greensboro, NC. Jed was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a Mason. He was a merchant, town clerk and county auditor in Greensboro. He founded the first free school in Greensboro, the Lindsay Street School.
Jeduthan married Martha C. Strange (1809-1867) of Bedford Co., Va., on 2 Nov. 1830. (Some sources give her middle initial as C some as G.) Martha was a daughter of Major Robert Strange and Elizabeth Early. Her brother, T. Early Strange, was publisher of The Greensborough Patriot newspaper for a time.

Jed and Martha had eight children: Jesse H. Lindsay (26 April 1832-18 Sept. 1859), Mary Virginia Lindsay (7 Sept. 1834-5 May 1853, died of consumption. Obit. says "only daughter of Jed. H. Lindsay, Esq."), Dr. James Early Lindsay (22 Sept. 1836-7 Feb. 1892, Surgeon, Confederate Navy, CSS Virginia, went to Baltimore and founded a medical school there), Robert Henry Lindsay (27 July 1838-4 Nov. 1861, died of fever in War), J. Harper Lindsay, Jr. (20 March 1840-11 Jan. 1876, Co. B, 27th NC Reg't., CSA), Thomas Strange Lindsay (16 Aug. 1843-17 Oct. 1869, Co.
