Jeffrey Manning

Note: Some old sources and Find A Grave are wrong if they state that his mother was Abigail Maverick. She could not have been. Abigail Maverick arrived in Colonial America in 1630 with her family—well before her then future husband and Geoffrey and Jeffrey emigrated.

Quoting from "The English Origin of Jeffery Manning of Piscataway, New Jersey"; The American Genealogist, No 341 Jan-Apr 2012 (Pub Oct 2013) Vol 86 No 1 pp 1-10 by Clifford L Stott and Patricia Donaldson-Mills, "As early as 1910, it was claimed in "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey" that Jeffery Manning of Piscataway was the son of John Manning, who came to New England at the age of 20 aboard the Globe in 1635. John was living in Boston with a wife Abigail in 1640. Like many published genealogies of the early twentieth century, no evidence was provided to support Jeffery Manning's claimed origin. Nevertheless, in the decades that followed, published accounts have repeatedly asserted that Jeffery is the son of John and Abigail." The article then goes forward to prove that Jeffery is actually the son of John Manning and Abigail Goodye of Hawstead, Suffolk, England.

Jeffery was baptized on 17 March 1638/9. On 20 March 1650, Jeffrey, age about 12, son of John Manning, thatcher, late of Harkstead [sic Hawstead?] was indentured to John Cutting of Charles Town (Boston area) in New England. This was Captain John Cutting, who transported emigrants during the Great Migration. Jeffery's indenture likely spanned 1651-1658.

Jeffery married Hepsibah Andrews, probably about 1661. The Andrews family lived originally in Hingham in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but then moved for quite some time to Duxbury. Their first children were born, therefore, in Massachusetts but three births are recorded in Piscataway, starting in 1772. In 1773 Jeffery signed an oath of allegiance to the Dutch government of New Jersey, and in 1775 we find the first record that he acquired land there.

Jeffery's will was executed on 30 December 1692 and was proved on the "third Tuesday" of March 1692/93. In his will he provides for "Hypsibah Mannin" as well as to children John, Joseph, James, Benjamin, Elizabeth Fitz Randolph, and a servant, Patience Walker.

Note: I am spelling his name Jeffery, as that is how he spelled it in his will. I have found many variations spelled with a J. I have not found a single instance of an historic document with it spelled with a G.

Geoffrey is said to have emigrated from New England to New Jersey about 1671 and was living in Piscataway Township in 1676 and died in 1698.

He married in 1662, Hepzibah, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Hatch Andrews of Hingham, Massachusetts, granddaughter of Sir Thomas Andrews, Lord Mayor of London.

Jeffrey was in Piscataway Township, NJ as early as 1676 in which year he purchased land. He was one of three commissioners to lay out land grants in 1682 and was marshal of the first County Court of Middlesex, held at Piscataway in 1683. He was the ancestor of a family that has been large and influential in and beyond NJ and is evidently extensive to the present day.
