About Jellis Pieterse Meyer

Jillis Pietersen, aka Jillis Pietterszen Meyer arrived before 1654 in New Amsterdam, coming from Gouda (NL). He settled in Beverwyck. He died in 1676.

A Gillis Pieterszen, probably this one, was mentioned in "New York Historical Manuscripts, Dutch." by Van Laer: page 130, in an article on the ruinous condition of Fort Amsterdam, the farms, mills and other public property given to Director Kieft on his arrival on 28 March 1638, Gillis Pieterszen van der Gouw, was listed as a master house carpenter and his age was listed as 27 years.

In the marriage record, they were: Jillis Pieterszen, young man from ter Goude, and Elsje Hendricks, young woman from Amsterdam. Elsje's probable father, Hendrick Jansen [Snyder], first bought land in New Amsterdam in 1641. He was aboard the ship Princess Amelia in September 1647 and drowned with so many other passengers when the ship -- bound for Amsterdam -- was wrecked off the coast of Wales. We know by the Court Minutes that his widow, Tryntje, was dead by 11 August 1653.

On 25 Oct 1653 Jillis Pieterse obtained a patent for a house and lot in Beverwyck (Albany), and perhaps lived there during the last years of his life.

According to Records of New Amsterdam edited by Berthold Fernow, Volume 1 -- "Court Minutes of New Amsterdam" -- page 95 under the date of 11 August 1653: Daniel Litschoe, plaintiff, versus Gillis Pietersen, defendant. The plaintiff demands payment of the second installment for a certain house and lot sold to the defendant's mother-in-law according to bill of sale thereof. The defendant as co-heir of the above-mamed Tryntie Scheerenborg says that if the plaintiff can deliver him a good deed of the whole lot sold, according to the bill of sale, payment will be forthcoming; otherwise [he] offers to give him back the house and lot, on condition of repaying the money which he has received therefrom. The Burgomasters and Schepens resolve to see how much the lot has been diminished on which the guard-house has been set when a decision shall be awarded to the parties.

Jillis Pieterse does not appear to have used the surname "Meyer"; his children did adopt that surname.
