Origins

Family records are supplemented by information from "A History of Henry County" by Judith Parks America Hill. She gives Michael Griggs as the father of Jeremiah Michael. It could be that his name was John Michael. According to her book Michael Griggs (or John Michael) was the ancestor of all the Griggs in Henry County. The Griggs served notably in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. One descendant served in the state legislature (Samuel J. Griggs, son of Franklin Griggs), another was a driving force in the establishment of the Danville and Western Railroad (Col. George King Griggs), and another dedicated himself to education (Greenbury Thornton Griggs), becoming the first School Superintendent of Heny County.
