"The Isaac Mize Family of Eastern Kentucky" by Franklin Miller, Jr. 1985

Our ancestor Jeremiah Mize married (1) Grace and (2) Tabitha. Since his son, Robert was born in 1721 in Bristol Parish, which could include the present Lunenberg Co, we believe that Jeremiah must have been born a few years before 1700, at the time when the elder James Mize was being tithed. At the May 1758 court, Jeremiah Mize "..for reasons appearing, he is exempt from payment of public and county levies for the future." This is probably because he reached age 60 and was exempted from the poll tax, again pointing to Jeremiah Mize's birth about 1698.

Jeremiah's wife, Grace, on May 9, 1727 relinquished her dower right in a sale of land. Two of her children were recorded in the Bristol Parish Register of Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties of Virginia: Robert born May 10, 1721 and Joshua, born March 10, 1726.

Grace must have died at some time after 1732, and he remarried to Tabitha _______. Jeremiah later moved to Oxford, NC in Granville County, and bought land there from Israel Eastwood on February 18, 1773. Jeremiah sold some of his Granville County land to John Mize on March 1, 1773, and on February 1, 1775 he executed a deed of gift, for 5 shillings, of 100 acres in Granville County to Howell Mize, for "care to Jeremiah and his wife Tabitha for their natural lives." From this we infer that Howell Mize was one of the younger sons of Jeremiah.

From Joel Mize: "Mize is of an unknown origin; first seen in Surry Co., VA in 1696. A dominan, repeaed legend had tto do with sailing on a whaling ship from Rotterdam to British Isles, thence to America."

GEDCOM Note

Jeremiah had 150 acres of land surveyed along both sides of Great Creek which is where the boundary of Brunswick County and Lunenburg County join in Virginia. Later his first wife, Grace relinquished the dower for this land on 9 May 1727. During a processioning which occurred on 14 July 1726, Jeremiah apparently moved to the confluence of Stoney Creek and Meherrin River where the Brunswick County line crosses the river. He moved from Lunenburg County, Virginia to North Carolina about the year 1750. He died in North Carolina about the same year, 1750. He had married Grace who gave birth to Robert about 1721 and Joshua about 1726. Jeremiah later married Tabitha and gave birth to John, Henry, Howell, Jeremiah Jr along with possible others. There is evidence of a grist mill called the Mize Mill on the Meherrin River which was located near the present day Dix Bridge where the Mize raceway ran to the Mize ford.

Jeremiah, Sr. Mize was born about 1694 and died ca. 1775. He married in 1720 to Grace whom was born in ca. 1695 and died ca. 1734. They had 3 children. Jeremiah moved to Oxford, NC, in Granville County, and bought land there from Israel Eastwood on February 18, 1773.
