Death of an Old Settler
On Tuesday, Feby 4th, 1896, Mr. J. C. York, aged 85 years, departed this life; death being caused by gangreene, arising from a small wound on the foot.
Deceased, Jeremiah C. York, was born at Mount Pleasant, Randolph Co., North Carolina, on Jan. 4th, 1811, and moved to Indiana in 1828, was married to Elizabeth A. Ward on Jan. 4th, 1838, at Gospott, Ind., who with her three children, Mrs. Dr. Roundsville of Larrimore, N. Dakota; Mrs. Geo. Jaqua and Alfred York, of this city, mourn his loss. In 1854 deceased came to this state, building the first house in the now beautiful city of St. Peter, but after a short stay there moved to this vicinity, where he has since made his home, and was respected by all.
The funeral services took place on Thursday in the M. E. church, and the remains were interred in the Cedar Hill cemetery, followed by a concourse of friends and relatives.
Among the relatives from abroad who attended the funeral were Mrs. Dr. Roundsville of Larrimore, N. D.; Mrs. G. A. Stanton and Mrs. Geo. Eubanks, of Sauk Center; Mrs. S. Jaqua and Mr. Clarence Casey, of Minneapolis.
