Jerome Tannenbaum, age 88, passed away peacefully in the early morning of June 5, 2017, at the Lyons Campus of the VA NJ Health Care System, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Irvington, NJ, October 10, 1928, to Nathan Tannenbaum and Etta Shapiro, he was the youngest of four brothers. After graduating from Weequahic High School, Jerome served his country as a Marine from 1947 to 1951, partly as a telegraph operator in the Korean War. After returning from service, he earned a BA in history from Upsala College. During his forty-year career as an English teacher and guidance counsellor at Irvington High School, he was beloved by his students and those he coached in football. He was advisor of the class of 1962 and was an honored attendee at their fiftieth class reunion.
Jerome loved to be with people and was open and friendly, wise and compassionate. He was a man of the arts, with a deep understanding of film, literature, and industrial crafts. He loved to travel, play chess, and stroll on the beach collecting shells at his summer home in Siesta Key, Florida. A longtime resident of Millburn, NJ, Jerome leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Rita (née Fischer); his children, Peter of NYC, Julia Obici of Annapolis, MD, and Inga Schoenbrun of Arlington, VA; grandchildren Melissa, Rachel, Ian, Nathan, and Elsa; sons-in-law Scott Obici and Benjamin Schoenbrun; and many nieces and nephews. His memorial service will be at Menorah Chapels At Millburn, 2950 Vauxhall Road, Union (Vauxhall), NJ 07088. Thursday, June 8 at 1:00 pm.
