About Jerry Soh-Wah-Soh-Ses
Seneca
Chief
- Son of Jacob Nicely-Whitecrow and a Woman of the Seneca
- https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/60584698/jerry-crow
- Seneca are a matrilineal society and tribe/clan association is birthed through the mother. Jerry and his brother, Jacob, both claimed Seneca as their heritage so it would follow that their mother was Seneca, not Wyandot.
- The Seneca did not move from their New York State lands until forced to. After the dissolution of the Buffalo Creek Reservation in New York (after the War of 1812; circa 1831), some of the Seneca were pushed to Canada and Ohio; others were subsumed into the Cattaraugus Reservation.
- Though there were many tribes displaced and pushed to Ohio and though the United States government melded them into a "Mixed Band", the tribes kept their heritage through clan systems (family groups). Once in Ohio, the Seneca Proper did intermingle with other tribes, including the Mingo Seneca, who had removed to Ohio in the 18th century. These Seneca became known as the Seneca of Sandusky.
