About Jesse Benton, II, of NC & TN
Jesse and Polly, married in Tennessee, are buried there; they had no children.
Jesse's brother, Thomas Hart Benton, who would later become a U.S. Senator from Missouri, were involved in a duel that led to the shooting of Andrew Jackson, an attorney who would later become President. Jackson had been the mediator in a duel between Jesse Benton and William Carroll; since Jesse was the challenger, William Carroll got to choose the rules -- and since he was not as good a shot as Jesse Benton, he set the duel up so that skill would not be an issue; the men were to stand back to back and then on a signal turn and shoot. Jesse Benton was grazed, but neither man was seriously hurt. This led, however, to bad blood with Jackson; later Thomas would seriously injure Jackson in a tavern brawl.
