About Jesse Hobson

Biographical Summary:

"...Jesse Hobson son of Nathan Harvey and Rebecca (Freeman) Hobson, born Jan.28,1812, in Randolph Co., N.C., . His parents moved in a few years to Vincennes, Knox Co., Ind., and later to Orange Co., Ind., About 1830 Jesse moved to Naperville, near Chicago, with his Uncle Bailey Hobson son of John and Lydia (Harvey) Hobson. Bailey Hobson built a grist mill in that area and Jesse helped him operate the mill for a number of years. On April 6,1835 Jesse married Catherine Daugherty, born May 4,1813, Orange Co., Ind., the oldest daughter of John and Mary (Hollowell) Daugherty, who had moved from Orange Co., Ind., to this area. In the early 1840's Jesse and Catherine became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints. In 1852 Jesse and Catherine moved to Utah, following the Church which had moved there in 1848, and settled at Farmington, Davis Co., Utah,. In the winter of 1855 Jesse served as a Representative of Davis Co., in the first Territorial Legislature. His wife Catherine died Dec. 14, 1855, leaving eight children.

In April 1856 he was called by the Church to go to England as a Missionary. Upon his return home he had charged of a large group of Church "Saints" who were going to Utah. They came on the ship "Empire".

On April 10,1859 he married, at Kaysville, Utah, Nancy (Henderson) Simpson, born Jan. 13,1828, Washington Mo., She died Dec. 18,1863 at Richmond, Utah.

On June 29,1865 Jesse married at Richmond, Utah, Sarah (Dowell) Rogers, a widow with 2 daughters, Julia Susanna, and Emily Clarissa. She died Feb.,17,1880. Jesse died June 18,1883 at Oxford, Idaho, while on a visit with a daughter..."
