Jessee Roberts

From the Roberts Family History compiled by Charlene Gilley Colerick, August 1986:

The Roberts history begins with Jessee Roberts, born August 1, 1802, based on Lee County census records. He died 4-21-1859 at Lee County. His mother and father are believed to be William and Catherine Roberts, but this has not been proved. It is known that a William Roberts had taxable property in Lee County in 1797, so he could have been the father of Jessee. Jessee Roberts had a wife named Nancy, born May 15, 1806. The children of Jessee Roberts confirmed in 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records. Early census records are difficult to read. It is hard to determine whether the child born in 1835 was named Daniel or David. The 1850 census gives the child's name as David. However, in 1860 and 1870 census, only the family of Daniel is found.

" I think I have information about this family, but my Jesse Roberts was born about 1804 and his wife Nancy Wallen Roberts was born about 1806. They lived in Lee County, Virginia. They both died in the spring of 1859 of an illness that took one of their daughters as well."

Mary,Ruthy. "If I dye before the youngest heir is 21 years old Nancy shall have the property for the use of raising the children till they all are of age." Signed by Jesse and Nancy ROBERTS, their marks. Wit., Jessee G. ROBERTS, Steven SURGHNER. Andrew ROBERTS appointed agent to settle affairs. Probated 11 May 1859."
