Jessie Alice Gish (born Evans), 1889 - 1975 Jessie Alice Gish (born Evans) was born on September 22 1889, in Skagit Co, WA. Jessie married Gaylord Raymond Gish on May 19 1920, at age 30 in Kelso, WA. Gaylord was born on May 24 1887, in Waterville, Le Sueur, MN. They had one daughter: Dorothy Evelyn Laulainen (born Gish). Jessie passed away on December 6 1975, at age 86 in Chehalis, Lewis Co. WA.
Jessie loved to farm and garden. For many years she milked (by machine) 30 head of cows morning and night usually alone. As her oldest granddaughter, I spent a lot of time with her. She taught me to put the machine on the cows before I started school. My sister and I were allowed to roam around the farm, barn, and house at will. I don't remember any rules. We would help her move cattle from one field to another, sometimes via the county road. We learned to move the irrigation pipes as needed. Sometimes we cleaned house and/or cooked. One summer she suffered from Menier's disease and was confined to bed most of the time. I went there every day and cooked their main meal which was eaten at noon. I was about 11-12 and learned a lot about cooking that summer. During the summer, our cousin, Maxine, would often stay with us and we'd play on the raft (used to move the irrigation pipes across the river) in the Chehalis River for many hours. We weren't good swimmers, but pretty good at dog paddling, at least proficient enough to keep from drowning in some pretty deep holes.
According to her sister Effie (Mae) Jessie was born in Sterling (near where United General Hospital is in Sedro Woolley). I think I got Burlington from some written record. I know she Lived in the Sedro Woolley area as a child. Then her parents moved south of Chehalis with the younger children, In the Onalaska area.
