MULLINS — Mrs. Jessie Derrick Lewis, 90, died Thursday, November 4, 2004 at her residence in Mullins.

Mrs. Lewis, school and social worker, was born in Johnston, Edgefield County, South Carolina on November 13, 1913, the daughter of Jesse Lee and Belle Carson Derrick. She graduated from Johnston High School in 1931 and received her A.B. Degree from Winthrop College in 1935. She married John Derham Lewis on July 27, 1940 and from this union had two children: John Pickens Derham Lewis and Linda Derrick Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis was a teacher and guidance counselor for 24 years in the Mullins Elementary School. She was a member of the Mullins Welfare Board from 1940 to 1950. She was a member of the South Carolina State Board of Social Services from 1952 to 1975. She was the drive chairman of the Marion County Unit of the American Cancer Society from 1952 to 1954. She was a Trustee of the Mullins Public Schools from 1947 to 1957, serving as Chairman from 1952 to 1957. She was a Trustee of the South Carolina Baptist Summer Camp from 1956 to 1960. She was a recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award from the Lions Club in 1949. She was a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church where she was President of the Women's Missionary Union from 1942 to 1950, and was also Adult Bible Sunday School Teacher from 1940 to 1980 and a member of the church Building Committee in 1960.

Mrs. Lewis was elected to the Mullins City Council in 1974 and served on the council until 1986. She was a Mayor Pro Tem during her term from 1984 to 1986. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society. She retired from the Public School System in 1979. She was a member of the Marion County Historical Society and a member of the Marion County Museum.

Surviving Mrs. Lewis are one son: John Pickens Derham Lewis of Mullins and one daughter: Linda Derrick Lewis (Starling Speed) Ray of Greenwood, SC. Four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Cedardale Cemetery in Mullins at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Mullins First Baptist Church Building Fund.
