About Jimmie William Hedrick

Jimmie W. Hedrick

SHINNSTON — Jimmie W. Hedrick, 75, of Calvin Street, Lumberport, WV, entered into the presence of his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ August 24, 2006.

He was born May 30, 1931, in Covington, Va., a son of the late James P. and Argie Blanche Hickman Hedrick.

He married Maxine E. Carroll August 10, 1950.

Before retiring from Clinchfield Coal Co. Mine Compass #2, Dola, WV, his mining career began before his 17th birthday in 1948, working at various mines throughout the WV region.

Jimmie was a stranger to no one and would not let you leave his home until you were fed or at least offered a meal to go.

On several occasions when the homeless were passing through after hopping the B&O train, they would come knocking on his door asking for food, and he graciously invited them in. He was well-known to family and friends for his invitations on Saturday mornings for homemade hotcakes and gravy.

In his earlier years he was a member of the Haywood Methodist Church, where he assisted his wife as they taught Sunday school, VBS and the Bible Club that was often taught in his home. He transferred to what is now the Lumberport United Methodist Church, where he continued his Christian work.

He will always be remembered for putting others first, his acts of kindness and a giving heart. He spent the last six years of his productive life dedicated to caring for his wife until her passing July 29, 2005.

Mr. Hedrick is survived by one sister, Dolly Rampley, Baltimore, MD; four sons, Larry Hedrick and his wife Linda, Huntington, Garry Hedrick and his wife Stephanie, Shinnston, David Hedrick, Lumberport, Rick Hedrick and Crystal, Haywood; two daughters, Debbie Stout and her husband Dan, Lumberport, Linda Wright and her husband Dave, Lumberport; 16 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, James P. Hedrick; one granddaughter, April Diane Hedrick; one brother, Calvin Hedrick; five half- brothers; one sister, Nettie Brewster; and two half-sisters.
