Jimmy Don Thornton was born April 12, 1958 to Virginia Roberta Faulkner Thornton and Billy Ray Thornton a high school history teacher and basketball coach. He was born in Mena, Arkansas. He is survived by brother Billy Bob Thornton (1955) and a younger brother, John David (1969).

Jimmy Don was the grandson of Otis Thornton, a Forest Ranger and Gertrude Barrett.

A musician and songwriter, Jimmy Don worked in San Francisco, CA as a chef at the Hard Rock Cafe. Two of his songs, 'Emily' and 'Island Avenue' were included on the album 'Edge of the World' in 2003 by his brother, Billy Bob.

Jimmy Don died of heart failure on October 3, 1988.
