Joachim (22), a farmer's son from farm Verdun, in Franschhoek, was stabbed to death, on 2nd September 2001. His body was found on the Helshoogte Pass near Franschhoek. It is not clear from the report if Achim was abducted from a farm or hijacked.
Boland police spokesperson Captain William Reid said police from Stellenbosch and Cloetesville had earlier stopped a vehicle on the Helshoogte Pass as the driver appeared to be under the influence of liquor. Police questioned the two occupants, and after a jacket was found on the roadside conducted a further search with a police tracker dog. They found Hanekom's body and a knife nearby.
