Joan Dacre

Joan took her mother's last name (Alice de Lucy) to herself rather than that of her father (Alan de Moulton).

• "In 6 Edw. I., this Ranulph obtained the King’s licence, to himself and his heirs; as also to Thomas de Musgave and his heirs, for a market upon the Tuesday every week, at Overton, in county Westmorland—and likewise, for a fare there yearly, upon the eve, day, and morrow of the Apostles, Simon and Jude—and in 7 Edw. I., being constituted Sheriff of Yorkshire, continued in that trust, until the end of the third quarter of the eighth year. In 13 Edw. I., he obtained a charter for free-warren in all his demesne-lands at Hedley in Lincolnshire and departed this life in 14 Edw. I. being then seised of the manors of Dacre, Sowerby, and Thwaites; as also of the Land of Newbiggin[-by-the-Sea], in county Cumbria. He likewise died seised of two scalings in Mosedale, within Allerdale held of the Lady Alice de Luci; paying one mark yearly for the same to her. Which mark she did assign unto him, in frank-marriage with Joane her Daughter. He likewise held Glenridding in Caldbeck, by the grant of the same Alice de Luci, in frank-marriage with the said Joane; as also jointly with her, the manors of Kellet, and Higham in Lancashire, leaving William his son and heir, twenty years of age, at the Feast of St. Gregory the Pope, in that year.
• "Which William took to wife Joane, the heir of Benedict Gernet.
• “And in 32 E. 1. was in that expedition then made into Scotland, in which year he obtained a charter for free-warren in all his demesne-Lands at Dacre in county Cumbria, and Halton in Lancashire. And in 1. Edw. II., [he] procured licence to make a Castle of his house at Dunwalloght, in county Cumbria on the Marches of Scotland. In 4 Edw. II., he was again in the Scottish Wars; and in 10 Edw. II. joined in commission with Anthony, Lord Lucie, for guarding the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, against the Scots. And having been summoned to Parliament, from 28 Edw. I. until 12 Edw. II. inclusive, departed this life in the same 12th year, Joane his wife then surviving; who had, for her dowry, an assignation of the manors of Halton, Fishwick, and Eccleston, in Leylandshire [now Leyland Hundred], in county Lancashire. leaving Ranulph de Dacre, his son and heir; who doing his homage, had livery of his lands: and in 18 Edw. II., upon the death of Joane his mother, performing his fealty, had also livery of those Lands, which had been so held by her in dower.”
