Joan M Hesselmann, 71, of Niwot, d Jul 16 2010 at Longmont United Hospital. She b Jul 20 1938 in New Vienna, IA to Otto & Theresa (Recker) Hagemann. Joan grew up youngest of 12 children on farm near New Vienna, IA. Between her sophomore & junior yrs of high school family moved to Dyersville where she met husband, James Hesselmann. Joan graduated from Xavier High School in Dyersville in 1956. Joan & James m May 10 1958 at St Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. They were married 52 yrs & lived majority of this time in Cedar Rapids, IA. Joan spent early yrs of marriage raising 3 children bef beginning career w/IA Dept of Motor Vehicles in 1978. She spent 22 yrs there bef retiring Jan 2000. Aft retirement, Jim & Joan moved to Niwot, living close to dtr Sheila & family. She was active mbr of St John Baptist Catholic Church, Longmont. Joan enjoyed reading books & loved taking long walks w/Jim. She also enjoyed being w/family & was especially proud of her 5 grdchildren. Joan was preceded in death by parents; bros Urban, James & Charles Hagemann & sister Cindy. She is survived by loving husband, James Hesselmann, Niwot; 2 sons, John (Meg), Chicago; & Patrick (Amy), Orland Park, IL; dtr, Sheila (Kenn) Perry, Niwot; 5 grdchildren, Sarah, Meghan, Sadie, Jacob & Zackary; 2 sis, Delores Bierman & Eileen Hagemann & 5 bros, Joseph (Kay), John (Veronica), Walter (Irene), Edwin (Inez) & Julius (Betty) & sis-in-law, LaVerne Hagemann. Vigil svc will be 7pm Sun, Jul 18 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10m Mon, Jul 19 at St John Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St, Longmont. Cremation will take place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel & Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to St John Baptist Food Bank & mailed to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
