About Joan Kent

Not a known child of Peter Arundell

Joan[e] was born about 1602 in London, England. A birth record has not been found, but she was old enough to travel alone to the Virginia Colony on the "bride" ship Tyger in 1621.

Virginia M. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, editors, "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia: 1607-1624/5, (Published by the Order of First Families of Virginia, 1987, 3rd edition), pp 384-5.

"Humfrey Kent came to Virginia in 1619 aboard the George, the ship

carrying the official party of the new Governor, Sir George Yeardley. Kent's wife, Joane, came in the Tyger, 1621, which carried some of the "Maids for Wives;" she may have been one of them. In Jan. 1624/5 the couple was living at Percy's Hundred on the south side of the James River. This plantation, originally known as Flowerdieu Hundred [named for the maiden name of the wife of Governor George Yeardley], had been acquired by Abraham Peirsey [Percy] from the Yeardley family before 1624.

Living with Humfrey Kent and his wife at Peirsey's Hundred was

Margaret Arundell, aged 9 years, no doubt a young kinswoman of Richard and Elizabeth Arundell who were listed at Jamestown, 1624/5, in the muster of Sir George Yeardley. The three Arundells had come to Virginia in the Abigaile, 1620-21.

Children of Humphrey and Joan:[1]

Mary Kent; m John Epes, eldest son of Francis Epes

I have wondered if Humphrey Kent's wife, Joan, was a daughter or near relative of Peter Arundell--a native of Normandy and French teacher of London who arrived in Virginia in 1621. Peter Arundell lived near Buck Row in Virginia, and died there between November 8, 1624 and January 20, 1624/5. His 9-year old [or 14-year old] daughter, Margaret, was living 50 miles up the James River with Humphrey and Joan Kent on January 20, 1624/5. If there was no family relationship between Margaret Arundell and Humphrey and Joan Kent, I wonder why Margaret was not taken in by a Buck Row family. In case someone is interested in these families, here are my notes on them.

Arundell researcher Shawn Potter offers a persuasive argument that Joane is the daughter of Peter Arundell.[2] However, London church records show that Joane, daughter of Peter "Eondell" was born 5 February 1611/12, which would make that Joane too young to have married twice by 1624/5.[3]

Possibly, there are two Peter Erondelle/Arundell families in London.

If so, the children of Peter Arundell, Adventurer of Purse & Person who died in Virginia in 1624, could have included a Joane Arundell born c1602, as speculated by Potter, who married (1) Capt Mansell, (2) Humfrey Kent.

In a letter written by Peter Arundell to Sir Edwin Sandys on 15 December 1621, Peter makes reference to "my Sonne in lawe Captaine Mansell (who is dead)...."[4]

Joane might have married Captain Mansell in London before voyaging to Virginia or in the Colony after her arrival on the Tyger in 1621.[5] In either case, he was dead prior to December 1621. And by January 1624/25 Joane was married again to Humphrey Kent. Captain Mansell has not yet been identified, although he may have been the Peter Monsell, 75 acres, who is included in a list of the "Adventurers to Virginia," with the several amounts of their Holding.[4]

The Joan who was married to Humfrey Kent by the 1624/5 muster is said to have been a Tobacca Bride; the muster shows she arrived in 1621 aboard the Tyger, one of several ships on which these brides sailed. As a share-holder and an "Adventurer" of the Virginia Company, it would not be unreasonable to suppose that Peter took advantage of the Company's initiative to have the passage of his daughter paid for by someone other than himself. Or she could have been aboard the Tyger as Mrs. Mansell. One of the FamilySearch entries for Peter has two entries for the baptism of a daughter Elizabeth: one in 1600 and one in 1609. One could be his and one another Peter, or the 1600 Elizabeth could have died young and a second daughter of the name baptized in 1609. An Elizabeth born c1600 could also have been a Tobacco Bride. Either could be the Elizabeth Arundell aboard the Abigail in 1621 or under the muster of George "Yearly" in 1624/5 - or that Elizabeth could have been Peter's wife.

He married about 1645, Mary Kent, daughter of Humphrey Kent and his wife Joane. On 3 August 1653 they sold 60 acres at Weyanoke where Humphrey Kent had resided. By 1657 John Epes was living on Shirley Hundred Island, now known as Eppes Island.”
