Joan Coke was born in 1538 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. She is the daughter of Giles Coke (1510-1560) and unknown mother.

Joan married James Phelps (1520-1588) in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England in 1558. James is the son of Richard Phelps Phylyppes (1497-1579) and Mary Tomes Phelps Phylyppes (1502-1584).

James and Joan Phelps became parents of the following known children: Robert, William, Nicholas, Walter, Thomas, George, Anne, Alice, Keneline and Edward. Many of their children came to America. Their son, Thomas was the first Phelps to come to America: Jamestown, VA in 1607 & 1608. He was apparently part of the London, England trade company.

Joan died in 1604 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. She was 66 years old.
