Biography

Johanna, family name currently unknown, was probably born in England c.1637 (based on the stated age an homeland of her husband), married Thomas Goodenow, probably no earlier than about 1657.[citation needed]

Johanna married, second, John Barnes.

Barnes: [Barrence. M.R.], John and Johannah _____, _____ __, 1664.[2]

Johannah Barnes, wife of John, died 29 October 1712.[2]

John Barnes is no doubt the John who d. 8 September 1715, aged 78,[2] and was likely the brother of Thomas Barnes who married Johanna's sister-in-law Abigail Goodenow. He made his will 3 December 1712 (pro. 4 October 1715) mentioning: Thomas Barnes of Brookfield; kinsman William Barnes of Haddam, Connecticut; kinswoman Abigail, wife of Josiah Jones of Watertown; the children of Supply Weeks by Susanna his wife, deceased, of Marlborough, Susanna the youngest child; Thomas Hall of Norwich; kinsman John Barnes, Jr., of Marlborough, residuary legatee and executor.[3]

According to Marlborough VRs, Thomas was buried 5 September (County reg.) or 5 October 1663. Thomas Jr., buried Oct. [Sept., M.R.] 5, 1663. However, he didn't make his will until 25 November 1663.

From _Colonial Records of Marlborough, Mass._ (Spalding) we learn that ten acres of cedar swamp were laid out to Thomas Goodenow Junr 7 March 1663/64. He must have died shortly thereafter, as his will was probated 5 April 1664.

From _Colonial Records of Marlborough, Mass._ we also learn that Jn° Barns married the widow of Thomas Goodnow Jr.: Samll Goodenow possesses ye Lands of his fathr Thos Goodenow senr Jn° Barns yt maryed the widow of Thos Goodnow Junr [now] occupies yt &c:. ||Some researchers use September 5, 1663 as the date of Death with a burial date of October 5, 1663, a month later. It is highly unlikely that a body would be kept above ground in September weather considering the very poor embalming methods available in the Massachusetts Colony. As an example of the poor techniques, those who were returned to England for burial were frequently transported in a cask of whiskey.
