Joanna Munson, wife of Thomas Munson died 13 Dec 1678 and was buried in the graveyard next to the 1st Church of New Haven.<ref name=gravestone /> This graveyard is now the town green. The stone, whose picture was in the 1895 Munson record, is no longer legible, or was not found, when the stones were moved to the Grove Street Cemetery.

Maiden Name ? ===Some people are claiming that Thomas Munson's wife was Joanna Mew, supposedly a daughter of Ellis Mew and wife Ann Gibbons.

Torrey's New England Marriages lists her as Joanna [Mew].<ref name=Torrey>Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Com, 1985.</ref> The brackets indicate Torrey had a reliable source, but not an actual record. However, if youexamine the sources listed by Torrey none of them mentions the name Mew. See Section From Torrey NE Marriages below. The other place "Mew" is mentioned is the "Second Boat," a defunct periodical, but the mention neglects to cite page and volume. In the Lost Ladies column: Johanna New or Mew, b. about 1611, d. 13 Dec 1678, New Haven, CT. Father was Ellis Mew, d. 1681, & mother was Ann Gibbons, d. 1681, prob England. Without seeing the periodical, the accuracy of this statement can not be evaluated Any wife of Thomas would not have been the daughter of Ellis Mew (d. 1681) and Ann Gibbons. Ellis was refered to as a young man in 1653, so would not have been the father of Joanna b. 1610. There may have been an Ellis Mew Sr., but there are no records of such a person.
