  • (I) Edward Winn, the progenitor of the New England family, was born about the beginning of the seventeenth century, and came with his family from Ipswich, England, to Massachusetts about 1639-40. He was one of the first settlers of Woburn, being there in 1641, and he died in that town, September 5, 1682. He was married three times. His first wife, Joanna, came from England with him, and their son Increase, born December 5, 1641, was the first child whose birth is found in the records of Woburn. It is probable that the son Joseph and the daughters Ann and Elizabeth were older, and came from England with their parents. Joanna, wife of Edward Winn, died March 8, 1649, and on August 2 of that year he married Sarah Beal. She died March 15, 1680, and Edward Winn married Mrs. Ann or Hannah Wood, widow of Nicholas Wood, who survived him, dying in 1686. Children: 1. Joseph, see forward. 2. Ann, married, September 26, 1648, Moses Cleveland, of Woburn. 3. Elizabeth, married, May 21, 1649, George Polly, of Woburn, a carpenter by trade; she died May 2, 1695. 4. Increase, married, in Woburn, July 13, 1665, Hannah, daughter of Richard Sawtell.
  • (II) Joseph, eldest son of Edward and Joanna Winn, was born in England, and came to this country with his parents about 1640. He died in Woburn, where he spent his life and reared his family, in 1641. About 1664 Joseph Winn married Rebekah, daughter of William and Mabel Reed, and sister of the first George Reed, of Woburn. Joseph and Rebekah (Reed) Winn had children: 1. Rebekah, born May 25, 1665, died April 6, 1679. 2. Sarah, November 9, 1666, married Ebenezer Johnson. 3. Joanna, 1668, married Edward

  • Knight. 4. Abigail, June 18, 1670, lived but one week. 5. Joseph, May 15, 1672. 6. Josiah, whose sketch follows. 7. Timothy, 1676, died March 22, 1678. 8. and 9. Rebekah and Hannah (twins), February 14, 1679. 10. Anne, November 1, 1684, died September 13, 1686. 11. Timothy, February 27, 1687, married Elizabeth Brooks, who had a son, Deacon Timothy Brooks, who became wealthy.

  • (I) Edward Winn came evidently from England to America, bring his wife Joanna, and children Ann, Elizabeth and Joseph. He settled first in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and was one of the commissioners for founding the contemplated town of Woburn. He was one of the signer of the "town orders," or by-laws, for Woburn in 1640, one of the original planters of that town in 1641, and was taxed in the first tax rate of Woburn, 1645. He was also the father of the firstborn child. He was made freeman 1643, and selectman 1669. His will was made at Watertown, May 6, 1682, and he died September 5, 1682. His residence was near a place in Woburn, known as the Vineyard, at which was a watering-place (on present Park street), the house being on some spot near Middlesex, Chestnut and Kilby streets. His wife Joanna died in Woburn, March 8, 1649. He married (second), August 10, 1649, Sarah Beal, died in Worburn, March 15, 1680. He married (third) Ann or Hannah Wood, respectively the wife of William Page, of Watertown; Nicholas Wood, of Medfield; and Edward Winn of Woburn. She died before November 1, 1686. Children: 1. Ann, married September 26, 1648, Moses Cleveland (ancestor of ex-President Grover Cleveland). 2. Elizabeth, married May 21, 1649, George Polk. 3. Joseph, see forward. 4. Increase, born December 5, 1641, died December 14, 1690.

  • (I) Moses (or Moyses) Cleveland (sometimes written Cleaveland), the common ancestor of the Clevelands of New England, was born at Ipswich, in Suffolk, probably in 1621, and at the time of his emigration from London (1635) was an indentured apprentice to a housewright. He was made a freeman in Woburn, Massachusetts, at the time of his majority in 1643, and he died there January 9, 1701-02. According to the Woburn records he acquired some political prominence, and was admitted to full communion with the First Church in Charlestown in 1692. On September 26, 1648, he married Ann Winn, born about 1626, either in England or Wales, daughter of Edward and Joanna Winn. His eleven children all born in Woburn, were: Moses, Hannah, Aaron, Samuel, Miriam, Joanna, who died at the age of six years; Edward, Josiah, Isaac, Joanna and Enoch.

It is doubtful (but possible) that Joanna's birth (maiden) name was Sargent. But There is significant evidence that the Joanna who was married to Mr. Walters is NOT the same person as Joane Sargent, who was married to Edward Winn.
