About Joanna de Ralegh
A manuscript in the Collectanea Topograpghica et Genealogica vol.1 states she was the daughter of Lord Botiler of Walis (Wales) and names her husband. Her father was not Ralph Boteler, Lord of Wem. He wasn't Welsh, he had a Welsh daughter in-law. There is no record for a daughter Joan/Joanna and he lived in Shropshire which is a long way from Nettlecombe, Somerset where her husband and children lived. There was a Boteler family in Wales, descendants of Arnold butler to Maurice Londres d.1166. He and his descendants who are mostly named John le Boteler, were fashioned Lords of Pembrey, Wales which is just across the bay from Nettlecombe. Arnold was probably Norman, he defended Ogmore castle during the Welsh rebellion. His Arms can be found at st. Illtud's in Pembrey. She was probably Joan ferch John, daughter of John le Boteler, Lord of Pembrey.
