from which: Jochem Caljer notes

~• in particular: an entry, dated June 1639, indicates that Jochem had crossed the Atlantic in the ship "De Brand Van Troyen" ("The Burning of Troy"), and while on board had become involved with Maddalena Michiels, who was coming over in the service of Andries Hudde. Jochem offered to reimburse Hudde for any money he had expended on Maddelena if Hudde would release her from her contract to serve him. and Hudde agreed to this (translation in New York Historical Manuscripts: Dutch [see note 4] 1:190-1, where the name is rendered as "Caljer"; the original, in New York Colonial Manuscripts 1:136, burned in the 1911 State Library fire).

Christina Vigne, daughter of Guillame and Adrienne (Cuvillier) Vigne, was baptismal sponsor for Jochem Caljer's twin children in 1650, and in 1655 was co-sponsor with Jochem Caljer for a child of Jan Nagel.

JOCHEM KALDER AND MAGDALENE WAELE. Jochem Kalder and his wife Magdalene Waele, both of whom belonged to the earlier settlers in New Amsterdam, were probably Scandinavians,—either Norwegian or Danish. Mr. J. H. Innes says, very little information can be gathered from the records respecting Kalder. He relates that one of the houses occupying, in the year 1655, the site of the present large building known as Nos. 31 to 35 Stone Street, was the cottage of Jochem Kalder, who had obtained a ground brief for the land in 1645, and who seems to have built within a short time thereafter upon the westerly side of his plot about thirty-seven English feet in frontage.
