1880 Census lists the following:

Emery, Albany B., 22, parents born SC

    "       Alice, wife, 21, parents born SC

Bell, Hosea, male, 19, single, boarder

• * Believe this Albany to be Joel. It appears (after having looked at the census) that he used the first name of a neighbor whos farm Wilburn (Joels father) worked on. (Albany Wingo) There is also another Bell living with them, as was in 1870, and Alice is his wife..

The 1900 census lists last name as Emery and states his birthdate as being Apr. 1850. (Family states it as 1847) Census also states his occupation as a baler, as being married for 29 years and being born in SC. The following family members were also listed:

Alice: Born- Jan 1856 ;  10 children, 9 living.

Mack: Born- Nov 1882

Rowland: Born- Mar 1885

Edward: Born- Mar 1888

Mattie: Born- Jan 1891

Lee: Born- May 1892

The 1910 Census for Spartanburg Co. (taken 2 May 1910) list his last name as being spelled Emory (O instead of E) and list his middle initial as "S". The following info is also listed:

Joel: age- 63; married- 39 yrs; Birthplace- Tenn; Father & Mother's birthplace- SC; Trade- Farmer;

Alice: age- 53; married- 39 yrs; Birthplace- SC; Father & Mother's birthplace- SC; Trade- none

          ** Also states Alice could not read or write.

Rowland: age- 24; Birthplace- SC; Father's birthplace-Tenn; Trade- Laborer (Family Farm)

Lee: age- 16; Birthplace- SC; Father's birthplace-Tenn; Trade- Laborer (Family Farm)

Thomas: age- 13; Birthplace- SC; Father's birthplace-Tenn; Trade- Laborer (Family Farm)

 ****NOTE***  His family is said to have come to the Spartanburg S.C. area from Ireland, by way of Virginia. Some Family remained in Ireland. It is said that he met and married Alice while hauling wood to Georgia by oxen. The wood was cut from what is now Lake Lure at Chimney Rock NC. **(Info obtained through family members)
