He was the son of John Andrew Gibson of Caswell County, North Carolina and Mary Gibson (Duncan) of Culpepper County, Virginia.

Joel Gibson married Eleanor Davis, b. 1753, in 1770 in Pittslvania, Virginia. They were the parents of at least eight, or possibly nine, children:

Note: According to the Court Order Book D - page 131 - Henderson County, KY., a deed recorded in May of 1832 listed the following names as children of Joel Gibson: Burgess Gibson, Greensberry Gibson, Bailey Gibson, Berryman Gibson, Robert Gibson, Vicey Stone, Nancy Shelton, and Margaret Stone

Joel Gibson enlisted in Caswell County in 1775. Re-enlisted and served under Capt. Henry DIXON commanded by Col. James MOORE. Fought at Moores Creek, Kings Mtn., Guilford Courthouse, and at the seige of 96 District of South Carolina. Discharged in 1783 in Wilmington. Rev war pension applied 4/15/1825, cert issued 5/19/1825 in Henderson County, KY.

JOEL GIBSON'S REVOLUNTIONARY WAR PENSION RECORD ORIGINAL CLAIM Declaration in order to be placed on the pension list under the Act of the 18th March 1818- Commonwealth of Kentucky, County of Henderson, on this 25th day of April 1825 personally appeared on open court viz the county court for said County of Henderson, being a court of record, & made so by the laws of the aforesaid state of Kentucky, which created it, Joel Gibson, resident in said county aged seventy five years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of Congress of the 18th March 1818, & the 1st of May 1820, that he, the said Joel Gibson enlisted for the term of six months in the year (say 1775) or when hostilities commenced in North Carolina, the date of enlisting & also of discharge not recollected, papers being lost by fire, in the state of North Carolina in the company commanded by Captain Henry Dixon in the Regiment commanded by Colonel James Moore in the line of the State of North Carolina on the North Carolina continental establishment that he continued to serve in the said corps until (as above) when he was discharged from the service in Wilmington in the state of North Carolina that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension, except the present, that his name is not on the role of any state except North Carolina, and that the following are the reasons for not making earlier application viz - his being totally unlettered, neither able to read or write & failing for two years, after strenuous application, to get anyone to undertake it for him: that he also served three months at the siege of Ninety six, with a forage wagon under Genl McCastle Wagon Master General - and in pursuance of the act of the 1st of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United states on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property or any part, thereof, with intent thereby so to diminish it, as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contacts, or debts due to me; nor have I any income other than what is certain in the schedule hereto annexed, & by me subscribed; that my occupation has been the tilling of ground, but thro' old age & bodily infirmities, I have been rendered totally incapable of following agricultural pursuits; that I have no wife, & my children being all married, & gone from me, am obliged to depend for support on my son, Bailey Gibson, who has a numerous family of small children to support that since the 18th of March 1818 no change has been made in my property.

Schedule of Property: Three pewter plates & (perhaps) some old knives & forks Joel Gibson Sworn to & declared on the 25th day of April 1825 before the Honorable, the County court of Henderson - I, William D. Allison, Clerk of the County court of Henderson do hereby certify that it appears to the satisfaction of the court that the said Joel Gibson did serve in the Revolutionary War as stated in the preceding declaration against the common enemy for the term of six months under one engagement on the Continental Establishment I'd also certify that the foregoing oath & the schedule thereto annexed are truly copied from the records of the said court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is three dollars and cents. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed the seal of the said court on this 25th day of April 1825. William D. Allison: Clerk of the Court of the County of Henderson, State of Kentucky Back to the top Second Claim Commonwealth of Kentucky Henderson County To Wit: On the 26th day of July 1824 personally appeared in open court being a court of record to wit a county court held for sd County of Henderson at the court-house in Henderson in the Commonwealth aforesaid, and on the day aforesaid Joel Gibson aged seventy five years resident of the county of Henderson and district of Kentucky who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: He entered as a private Soldier & left it a soldier with an honorable discharge. He served in the 1st North Carolina Regiment commanded by Colonel James Moore & Captain Henry Dixon's company & of the Continental Line; And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on 18th day of March 1818. and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with interest so to diminish it as to come within the provision of an act of Congress entitled " an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818" and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts owe to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed; and by me subscribed And I do swear that I have no property neither real nor personal, that my occupation is the cultivation of the soil and my age and infirmities prevent my being useful in the cultivation of the soil, that the number of my family is none, myself being obliged to depend on my son, Bailey Gibson, for support. Joel Gibson Schedule of property: No property Back to the top Response to Claim William Hill, Secretary of State, in N. C. states " The soldier of Henderson County on Kentucky was a private in the company commanded by Captain Dixon of the regimental under Colonel James Moore in the North Carolina Continental for seven years from 1776 to the end of the war 1783. He was inscribed on the roll of Kentucky at five dollars a month beginning on April 25, 1825. The certificate of pension was issued on May 19, 1825 and sent to John Green, Jr, Esquire Henderson County, Kentucky. Back to the top Removal from Rolls May Court 1832 Court Order Book D page 131 This day personally appeared Berman Gibson and Bailey Gibson in open court and voluntarily made oath that Joel Gibson, late a pensioner of the United States on the Kentucky roll of agency departed this life on the 23rd December 1830 - that he left no widow and that the number and name of his children are as follows - Burgess Gibson, Greenberry Gibson, Bailey Gibson, Berryman Gibson, Robert Gibson, Tilghman Gibson, all sons; Vicy Stone, alias Gibson, Nancy Shelton, alias Gibson, and Margaret Shelton, alias Gibson, three daughters, and that they are all persons of age.
