About Joel Stamper

Joel Stamper, a Revolutionary War soldier, age seventy seven, appeared in court to claim a pension for his war service . His pension record number was S3999. 'I was born in Amherst c o, VA on M ay 17, 1755 and continued to live there until I was twelve years old. In 1867 my father brought the family to Wilkes Co, NC. where I lived until I entered the service. I was a volunteer in Captain Jesse Walton's Company of Minute Men. About a week after, I marched to Salisbury, where I was stationed with General Rutherford for three months at the end of which time I was discharged and return ed home.

After a short time I was again ordered out under the same Captain to go against the Tories who had embodied themselves near Cross Creek or Fayetteville. We marched to Dobious Cross Roads near Salem where we were join ed by General Rutherford and then marched to Cross or Crop Creek. Before we reached there most their men had been killed or taken prisoner. The prisoners were sent to Virginia in charge of light horsemen. The remaining men were discharged from General Rutherford's army and we returned home after two months.

Not long after this, the information was received by Colonel Cleveland that Colonel Ferguson was advancing from South Carolina with a large body of British and Tories. Colonel Cleveland and Colonel Campbell 's Virginia Regt. were near Winter Fort in Burke County and they marched into the edge of South Carolina to the Cherokee Ford on Broad River. That part of t he army which could procure horses went on to King 's Mountain to meet Ferguson. I had no horse and couldn't get one, so was left behind and did not reach the battle ground in time. The battle was over and the troops were returning with the prisoners and were twenty five miles on this side of the battle ground before we joined them.

We then marched with the prisoners as far as Salem, North Carolina. When I reached Salem, I received my discharge. I had been gone three months this time. I also served at the command of Captain John Morgan .

After this I returned to Wilkes County where I remained. There is no documentary evidence to prove my service. I do not remember receiving any written discharge. There is a record of my age in the family bible. Capt. John Holloway, and Capt Benjamin Hammons are person to whom I am well known in this neighborhood who can testify to my character, William Spicer, John Pruitt and Wm. Johnson are witnesses who can testify to my service /s/ Joel Stamper (his mark) http://www.stampers.org/legacy%20rpt/joel_nancy/d1.htm
