Per Jeanette Hunter (JerrieHunter@aol.com) Jan. 17, 2012 - "Anna the Cherokee was Joel's mother. Joel was my gggggrandfather. He never married Anna but she is listed on several papers. Don't know where Anna is buried - someone told me they found a grave stone in Cherokee with the name Anna Slaveless that was thought be her. My grandfather talk to me some about how he was told during the removal of the Indians, Joel took the family to the Tellico Hills (place called Rafters) and it did show up the family in census." The reference to location of the grave stone in Cherokee refers to Cherokee, NC.

Researcher Elaine Morris-Moxness reported “My mother told me a similar story of how the old man (presumably Joel Underwood) was too sick to travel on the Trail of Tears. They travelled from GA at night in a mule drawn buckboard wagon and hid during the day. They settled in Tellico Plains area. Rafter, TN soon the general area”’
