About Johan Johansson Vuontisjärvi

Johan Johansson Vuontisjärvi or Jöns Jönsson Vuontisjärvi is the founder of Vuontisjärvi village in Enontekiö, Finland.

According to Maunu Hiltunen master thesis, Johan Johansson from Muonio applied permission from Enontekiö "court" in 28.-29.1.1735 to settle in Portuslompolo (Kuortuslompolo), belonging to Peltovuoma Lapp village. After an onsite overview of a possible place to settle, the court decided that Johan Johansson could settle about 20km south along Pöyrisjoki river, on the shore of Vuontisjärvi lake, which he then did.

Johan Johansson father and mother is unknown. Johan or Jöns has also been addressed in the Enontekiö church books as Johan Johansson Rommavuoma, which indicates that there is a connection to Rommavuoma in Enontekiö. It is also written that he is the son of a settler in Muonioniska.

If anybody have any more information about Johan Johansson Vuontisjärvi/Rommavuoma please take contact. Ari Martin Laakso, ari.laakso@ulapland.fi

1.1.2013 There are not many possibilities regarding the name Johansson or Jönsson in Muonioniska in the period of 1650 - 1675, when Johan's father should have lived. Erik Kuosku among others have discussed this topic of who is the parents of Johan Johansson Vuontisjärvi. One option mentioned is the family of Jöns Hansson Kätkäsuando in Muonioniska, which I argue is the right one. There are several reasons for this and I will deliberate them further.

Erik Kuosku writes in "anbrytarforum" the following:

Jöns Hansson Kätkäsuando (i Kätkäsuando). Omnämnd 1692-1709 [mantalsl%C3%A4ngder] G.m. Marit, omnämnd 1711 [mantalsl%C3%A4ngd] Barn: 1. Jöns, omnämnd 1711 [mantalsl%C3%A4ngd] 2. Anna

Erik Kuosku also have the following information on his webpage: (http://johannaocherik.se/erik/p1e42831b.html)

1690 Jöns Hansson Kätkäsuando Husbonde i Kätkäsuando.. Far: 3380 Hans Anundsson (Kätkäsuando) Mor: 3381 Anna Bosatt: mellan 1692 och 1709 Kätkäsuando, Pajala sn. 1) Familj med 1691 Marit Barn: 845 Karin Jönsdotter Kätkäsuando (1686 - 1771) Noteringar Husbonde i Kätkäsuando, Pajala sn. Källor

According to these sources Johan Johansson has two sisters. These are Karin Johansdotter and Anna Johansdotter. Karin Johansdotter marries Henrik Henriksson Hetta in 1727, the founder of Hetta village in Enontekiö. Karin is the 2nd (or 3rd) wife of Henrik Henriksson.

8 years later, in 1735, Karin's brother Johan Johansson Kätkäsuvanto (age 39) asks the permission to establish a settlement inside the land "owned" by Henrik Henrikson Hetta. He must have had the approval for this by Henrik before he addresses the Enontekiö court to ask for the official permission. He is granted the permission to build his settlement on the shore of Vuontisjärvi and it is from this that the history of Vuontisjärvi village and family starts.

The notion of Rommavuoma in connection to his name, must have to do with the time between Kätkäsuvanto and Vuontisjärvi. Probably he has been working as a "rendräng" for some family in Rommavuoma.

By going through the godmothers and godfathers of Johan Johansson's and his wife's Marget Nilsdotter Kunnari (Kunnare) children, we can also make some interesting assumptions of the family relations of Johan Johansson. I will make a more comprehensive analysis of these people in the near future. Ari Martin Laakso, ari.laakso@ulapland.fi

A (dräng) Jöns Jönsson is marked as one of the godfathers of Johan Henriksson Hetta which is the son of Hindrick Hetta and Carin Johansdotter. This supports the assumption that Johan Johansson Vuontisjärvi and Carin Johansdotter Hetta were siblings.
