Johan van Dyk (1944 - 2002)

Brief overview:

Johan (58), and his wife, Maria Christina Magdalena van Dyk (54) were found on the farm Kareebosch, Polokwane, Limpopo, which they had been managing for the owner, Gert Fourie. They had been beaten with a hammer and a wheel spanner, and then stabbed to death.

After the perpetrators had murdered the couple, the killers then ransacked the house and loaded the goods on to the couple's bakkie and left. Fourie told police he was away at a resort when the couple were attacked. He last spoke to Johan around 16:00 on Monday.

An hour later he phoned again but there was no reply, and no reply by Tuesday morning. He then sent his younger brother, Christo Fourie, to investigate. Christo found Christina van Dyk's body outside the house, Johan's body was found at the houses of the farm labourers.

There were only two labourers on the farm at the time, said Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo, and it was not clear where they had been when the Van Dyks were attacked.

A safe was missing from the house. Another safe had been broken open. A Jeep that had been stolen from the farm was later found on the Duivelskloof road.

Police had launched a large manhunt, said Mojapelo, and were being helped by trackers, police dogs and soldiers.
