Credit where credit is due

U.S.G. Bowersox was the first to compile information about the Bauersachs lineage in his booklet that he published in 1941. Since the early 1970s Tom and Jan Bowersox have endeavoured to assemble the Bauersachs lineage from its beginnings in Germany. All of the information about the early generations of our Bauersachs lineage comes from these two sources. Tom and Jan Bowersox founded the Bauersachs Genealogical Society in 1977. At their web site you can read much more about family reunions, the publications about our lineage that are available for purchase, and much more about the history of our family.

Early records of Bauersachs (References)

The Bauersachs family originated in the southern Thüringen region of Germany near the town of Sonneberg. The name is possibly a composite of two names ("Bauer" and "Sachs") which could have happened when one of the families would have become extinct because there was no male heir to carry on. The first record of Bauer is in the archives of Greifswald: Johanus Bauer, 1354 A.D. The oldest record of Sachs, also spelled Sax and Sachs, is in the archives of Obereuringen: Wecilo der Sachs, 1146 A.D. A later entry records Dietricus Sachs in 1252 A.D. Alternatively, "Sachs" could refer to a Saxonian origin of the family.

Contemporary investigations into the family begin with Hans Bauer, called Sachs, who was born about 1500 and lived in Judenbach, northeast of Sonneberg, where he worked as a forester. If the nickname "Sachs" refers to Saxonian origin then his family may have come from Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) along with many others who moved from there to the Harz, which lacked inhabitants due to the 14th Century bubonic plague. Some people continued on to Thüringen. Judenbach was founded in the 14th Century and the name is allegedly of Slavic origin. It is located along an old trade route between Thüringen and Franken. Judenbach is recognized for its Luther Inn where Martin Luther spent several nights in 1530. Hans Bauer Sachs had a son, Peter, who followed his father as a forest ranger in this region of Thüringia.
