Obituary: Morgan Herald, July 22, 1853, Vol 11 No 16. "Died of pulminary consumption on the 16th July at his residence in Malta, Jacob Bumgardner, Esq in the 66th year of his age. Mr. B had been the subject of affliction for many years, and was still making use of medical means to repair a shattered constitution. But all human efforts proved incompetent and he seemed to advance rapidly towards the close of life. Letting go every consideration that bound to earth and friends and throwing himself on the mercy and merits of Christ, he stated to a friend that he was not only ready but anxious to go. And while his bed was surrounded by his heartstricken wife and some of his children who could be present, all bathed in tears, his immortal spirit took its flight to God who gave it. Thus ended the life of a kind husband and parent, and a much esteemed citizen. God called the life He lent away, The doer returned from whence it came, His spirit left the moving clay, and death pulled down his mortal frame."
