About Johann Georg (George) Bieber

Note

George's baptism record may suffer from the "Easter" effect, where church ledgers sometimes contained records from two years. Based on his date proximity to sibling Diebold Bieber, it may be the case that he was really born in March 1697.

Life

George Bieber was born in March 1698 and died in June 1775, aged 76 years and eight months. He married in Bas-Rhin to Anna Magdalena Schaeffer. He is buried with her at Christ Mertz Lutheran Church, Dryville, Pennsylvania.

Some accounts of George claim he remained in Chester County when Johannes and Dewalt came to Maxatawny and Rockland townships.

The Beaver family reunion in 1937 had a stone carved over with his name and dates. It was later determined this stone was that of Margaretha Bieber 1765-1770. This was determined with the discovery by this author of another stone two rows away having all the correct dates along with his name.

He had at least 4 children: sons John, Dieter(Dietrich), and Dewalt(Theobald), and daughter Margaretha Sell.

Immigration

George and his two sons, Dewalt and Johannes, sailed on the ship "Friendship" from Rotterdam, arriving in Philadelphia November 2, 1744. They first settled in Chester county but soon thereafter came to Berks county. Johannes is buried at this cemetery with George. Dewalt is buried on a farm cemetery 1/2 mile from Peter's Mill near Friedensburg(Oley), Pa. Johannes Jr. served in the Revolutionary war under Gen. George Washington and died at Valley Forge at the age of 55. George's brother Dewalt settled in Maxatawny township.
Many members of this family were organizers of the Christ Lutheran Church in 1747, now called Mertz Church, which was known earlier as Bieber's Church.

History

First we shall give the history and genealogy of George Bie¬
ber. From wills and deeds recorded in Berks and Chester Co. court houses and from the Lutheran church record at Dryville, Pa., and other records it is disclosed and proven that George Bieber, born in Germany, October, 1698, died June, 1775, aged 76 years and 8 months, and was the father of John Bieber, 1722-1777, the Rvolutionary War soldier, who died of camp fever at Valley Forge, Chester Co., while he was serving in the Amer¬ ican army. Therefore the above George Bieber was the grand¬ father of the 96 year old John Bieber, bom 1748, died 1844, of Maxatawney township, Berks Co., Pa.

This ancestor George Bieber, both he and his wife Margaret, are buried at Dryvillle Lutheran church, Rockland township, Berks Co., Pa. His tombstone is found in this cemetery.

He was known by some persons in early life as “Maxatawny George’* to distinguish him from another George Bieber of about the same age, possibly a cousin, who resided in the Oley Hills. This George evidently was the John George Bieber who is men¬ tioned in Von Arnswald’s report found in the preceding pages of this book, and may be the same John George Beaver mentioned by Rev. A. Stapleton in his “Memorials of the Huguenots in America,” published in 1901, which will also be found following Von Arnswald’s report. We mention these facts here to show that we have carefully examined all the available records before coming to our conclusion that there were two immigrant ances¬ tors by the name of George Bieber (Beaver), and the one we are now following we shall term the “Maxatawny George.”
