About Johann Conrad Lahm

Arrival: 1741 in Pennsylvania (Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s)

He came from Kleinrich, Germany in the part of the Hunsruck hills which belonged to the Pfalz (Palatinate) at that time. Conrad, tailor by trade, son of Peter Lahm was granted permission by the government of Trabach 26 Apr 1741 to go to Pennsylvania, on conditions that he either pay their manumission fees (to be freed from slavery).

Conrad, aged 22 years, arrived in Philadelphia 20 Nov., 1741 in the ship Europa, he worked as an indentured servant for his passage. (Note: there are only 20 years, not 22 years, from his 1721 birth and 1741 immigration). In 1757 Conrad and Catherine purchased a 212 acre farm near Brocks Gap in what is now Rockingham County, Virginia. The land was immediately south of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River a mile west of Brocks Gap. The east boundary of the land was roughly the Shoemaker River that flows mostly north at that point. The farm extended south along the Shoemaker a short distance past the forks with Reedy Run (formally called Lamb Run). He sold the farm in 1767. On 19 Nov 1760 his name was added to the tithable (tax list). It is assumed that Catherine was a widow by 1776 since that was the last date Conrad's name appeared on the tax rolls of Bethel Twp., Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
