About Johann "Leonard" Garman
DAR Ancestor #: A044050
Johann Leonhard German served as a Private in the Revolutionary War. The Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Volume 7, Page 980 says that Adam, John, George and Leonard Garman all served in the 10th Battalion of Militia Under Colonel David Jenkins. Leonhard was also a wagoner (or driver) under command of Colonel Jacob Carpenter, he was only 16 years of age at that time. He hauled provisions from Lancaster County to the Army in Philadelphia and Valley Forge.
On March 30, 1813, Leonhard bought 111 acres and 120 perches in the vale south of Hertzler's Hill, east of Skirktown Glen from David Kurtz. This became the Garman Homestead where he built his home on the north side of the vale near Hertzler's Hill. The original house and barn burned down and were never rebuilt. by 1975 this land was still owned by Leonhard's son Phillip. Iron ore was discovered on this land in the early 1860's in the Welsh Mountains.
His first wife died and he married a second time.
