Zoege von Manteuffel or Manteuffel called Szoege or Manteuffel-Szoege is the name of an old Baltic noble family that begins in the Baltic with Gerardus Soye, who is mentioned in a document on June 11, 1325 as a vassal of the King of Denmark Christian II along with 40 others. 1333 and 1360 "Johannes dictus Zoge" is mentioned as canon of Dorpat. In a document dated June 30, 1390, Henneke and Gert Soye are described as sons of Claus. In 1428, Hermann, Claus, Otto and Hans Soye sealed the Archbishop's deed with the Teutonic Order.

The name alternated between Zoye, Soye, Soeghe, Zoeghe, Zöge, Szoge, Zoege and Szoege or other spellings. The nickname "Manteuffel" was first adopted in Courland in the 17th century, later also in Estonia and Livonia, and today, for the sake of simplicity, it is often used as the main name. It is probably a family of Baltic Germans or knights of German descent who came to the country towards the end of the 12th century as part of the German Ostsiedlung with the Order of the Brothers of the Sword.

There is no relationship to the Pomeranian family with the name von Manteuffel, which also has a different coat of arms. It is unclear why the Szoege family from Kurland also adopted this name.[1] The Kurland line sealed for the first time in 1528 with a coat of arms almost identical to the coat of arms of the Zoeges from Estonia. The Polish cavalry captain Evert (Eberhard) Soye auf Zunzen wrote in 1601 as the first - initially once - "Szoege gen. Manteuffel". Only his son Eberhard (1590-1637) used the nickname Manteuffel regularly. A family history of the Courland line published in 1909 listed two fictitious married couples, which it linked to the Pomeranian line, which was corrected months later. The "Manteuffelsche Familienverband e.V.", founded in 1894, includes all namesake.

Manteuffel (Adelsgeschlecht)

Zoege von Manteuffel oder Manteuffel genannt Szoege bzw. Manteuffel-Szoege ist der Name eines alten baltischen Adelsgeschlechts, das im Baltikum mit Gerardus Soye beginnt, der als wierländischer Vasall des Königs von Dänemark Christian II. nebst 40 anderen am 11. Juni 1325 urkundlich erwähnt wird. 1333 und 1360 wird "Johannes dictus Zoge" als Domherr von Dorpat erwähnt. In einer Urkunde vom 30. Juni 1390 werden Henneke und Gert Soye als Söhne des Claus bezeichnet. Hermann, Claus, Otto und Hans Soye siegelten 1428 auf der Urkunde des Erzbischofs mit dem Deutschorden.

Name Der Name wechselte zwischen Zoye, Soye, Soeghe, Zoeghe, Zöge, Szöge, Zoege und Szoege oder auch anderen Schreibweisen. Der Beiname „Manteuffel“ wurde erstmals in Kurland im 17. Jahrhundert, später auch in Estland und Livland angenommen und ist heute vereinfachend oft als Hauptname gebräuchlich. Vermutlich handelt es sich um eine Familie von Deutsch-Balten bzw. deutschstämmigen Rittern, die gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts im Rahmen der Deutschen Ostsiedlung mit dem Schwertbrüderorden ins Land kam.

Es besteht keine Verwandtschaft zur pommerschen Familie mit dem Namen von Manteuffel, die auch ein anderes Wappen führt. Warum die kurländische Familie Szoege diesen Namen zusätzlich annahm, ist unklar.[1] Die kurländische Linie siegelte erstmals 1528 mit einem dem Wappen der Zoeges aus Estland nahezu identischen Wappen. Der polnische Rittmeister Evert (Eberhard) Soye auf Zunzen schrieb sich 1601 als erster – zunächst einmalig – „Szoege gen. Manteuffel“. Erst sein Sohn Eberhard (1590–1637) benutzte den Beinamen Manteuffel regelmäßig. Eine 1909 verlegte Familiengeschichte der kurländischen Linie führte zwei erfundene Ehepaare auf, die sie mit der pommerschen Linie verknüpfte, was schon Monate später berichtigt wurde. Der 1894 gegründete „Manteuffelsche Familienverband e.V.“ umfasst alle Namensträger.
