Herman was the son of Wessel Hanekamp. He immigrated to the United States, c. 1889 and, by 1900, had became a naturalized citizen.
He married Elizabeth Buschelman, the daughter of Joseph & Catherine Heide Buschelman, on November 20, 1895 in Milldale, Kentucky. The couple were the parents of Joseph John, William and Coletta Mary Hanekamp and an unnamed infant son. Mrs. Hanekamp passed away, in 1921.
He married Louise (nee Felix) Elsener. She was the daughter of John & Katherine Sand Felix and the widow of Adolph Elsener. Mr. Hanekamp passed away from the effects of influenza and acute purulent bronchitis, with a duration of two weeks, complicated by cardiorenal insufficiency, with a duration of nearly a week.

Herman Hanekamp, Former Latonia Official, Dies at His Home.
Herman Hanekamp, 60 years old, 317 East Thirty-third Street, Covington, died at his home early yesterday following a brief illness. He had been a resident of Latonia most of his life and was Superintendent of Public Works at Latonia before it was annexed into Covington.
Hanekamp was a director of Mother of God Cemetery, and a member of Knights of St. George, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Holy Name Society and the Loyal Order of Moose, Covington.
Surviving are his widow, Louise F. Hanekamp, one son, William Hanecamp and three daughters, Mrs. Coletta Mereaux [sic Nereaux], Mrs. Edna Dickmeyer and Mrs. Hilda Kerl.
Funeral services are to be conducted at the residence tomorrow at 8:30 o'clock with requim [sic requiem] high mass at Holy Cross Church, Latonia, at 9 o'clock. Burial is to be in Mother of God Cemetery.
