About Johann Jacob Jacob Brahms
Musician. Born Johann Jakob Brahms in Holstein, Hamburg, one of three children of Christiane Magdalene Asmus and Johann Brahms an inn and shopkeeper. He was apprenticed to the town piper in Wesselburen, and in 1826 he moved to Hamburg, where he worked as a musician playing in beer gardens. In 1830, he married a seamstress, Johanna Christiane Hendeike Nissen, with whom he had three children, including the composer and virtuoso, Johannes Brahms. In 1835, he was employed as a horn player in the Bürgermilitär. In 1853, he played double bass at the Stadttheater. From 1864 to 1870 he was the double bass player at the Hamburg Philharmonic.
