Ancestral File Number:<AFN> RGDT-59 [hall0900.FTW] Immigrant's surname: NAEHER Immigrant's given name(s): Johann Karl Ship name: Midfort U.S. arrival date: SEP 1710 Port: Red Hook, NY Place of origin: Birkenfeld, Germany Source: Church Records from Birkenfeld & Rhinebeck, NY, Book of Names Notes: Johann Karl Naeher (Neher, Near, Neer, Nayer, others)was a Palatine Immigrant to America, who fled Germany with his wife, and two sons first to Rotterdam, then to England. Queen Anne of England struck a deal with the Palatines and Huguenots which provided that the refugees would product pine tar and pitch for the British Naval stores in return for passage to America, land, and implements for farming. They sailed for America on the Midfort, across the Atlantic, and up the Hudson River to Red Hook, NY. During the trip, it is assumed thatthe wife passed away as she is not listed in any records after their arrival. The project initiated by Queen Anne subsequently failed after less than oneyear, and the refugees were left to fend for themselves. Even with this, their loyalty to Queen Anne and the British crown was unmatched. Most of their story is contained in a book, published by Mary Near Frashuer of Akron, Ohio, back in the late 1950's. She is still living, though in her '80s. The book is titled "Our Canadian Nears and Early Kin", and may be found in the Case Western Reserve University Library, in Cleveland, Ohio. In the book, she asserts that nearly every "Near", "Neer", and other variations may be traced to this immigrant ancestor. Johann Karl Naeher's gravestone is still standing inthe churchyard cemetery of the "Old Stone Church" in North Rhinebeck, NY. The
construction of the church was one of Karl's last projects before his death. Submitted by: William C. Near Email address: wnearS1285S1290S1287S1286S1288S1290S1287@
