On Thursday 28 January 1751 two brothers from Germany arrived in Table Bay, Cape Town on the ship, Sparenryk. They were Johan Martin Schmalberger, born 1726 and his brother Johann Wilhelm Schmalberger, born 1728. In South Africa, they both dropped the German “ch” from their surname, becoming known Smalberger. The younger brother also acquired another Christian name- he became known as Johann (Carel) Wilhelm Smalberger

They were the 4th and 5th born of Johannes and Catharina Elizabeth Schmalberger (nee Venator) family of 9 children, all born and baptised in Lohrhaupten. Their father as well as their grandfather were ministers of the evangelical Lutheran church of St. Matthew in Lohrhaupten. As early as 1057, the church, located on a mountain spur above the village, was designated by the Archbishop of Mainz, Luitpold I, to be the parish church for the surrounding towns.

Lohrhaupten means Source of the Lohr and is situated in Hesse.
