Born on 22 Jan 1776 in Hütschenhausen and was christened on 25 Jan 1776 in Hütschenhausen. He died on 15 Sep 1856 in Preston, Waterloo, Ont.. Valentin was employed as kleermaker. Valentin married Maria Eva KLICK "Eva", daughter of Johann Michael GLU(E)CK and Maria Elisabeth CHRISTMANN, on 9 Apr 1799 in Hütschenhausen. Eva was born on 17 Mar 1783 in Zweibrücken, Dld. and was christened on 20 Mar 1783 in Zweibrücken, Dld.. She died on 2 Mar 1873 in La Sharitz, Shalet, Canada.
De drie oudste kinderen waren getrouwd in Duitsland. De twee oudste kinderen emigreerden met hun echtgenotes resp. in 1834 en 1837 naar New Yorken Katharina en haar man nog later (in 1852 woonachtig in Waterloo Co.,Canada), terwijl Valentin met de rest van zijn gezin al in 1831 met het schip Francois I emigreerden. Na enige tijd verhuisden ze vanuit New York naar Canada.

Valentin is listed in the German records as a farmer's assistant. The three oldest children were married in Germany, the rest in Canada. Valentinand Eva Maria emigrated to Canada in 1831, with their minor children. The two oldest are listed in the National Archives in Washington, DC as having arrived in New York in 1834 and 1837, respectively. Uncertain of the date when Katharina, the third child, arrived in Canada with her husband, but they are listed in the 1852 census of Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada. Several of the family are listed in that same census, including Valentin the Elder, listed as a Tailor, living with his wife in the Villageof Preston, Ontario, Canada.
After the Napoleontic wars, there was a great unrest in Bavaria, and many people wanted to leave the country. So Valentin Knechtel and his wifeAnna and their children Philippe, Eva, Barbara, Valentin jr., Georges, Marie, Nicolas, Elisa, Wilhelm, Maria, Valentin arrived Aug 23, 1834 with the Ship Francois I in New York from Hütschenhausen, Bavaria.( Hütschenhausen, is located near Landstuhl, in the province of Rheinland-Phalz andin those early days it was a part of the kingdom of Bavaria.) Port of Departure Havre. All his sons settled in Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada.
They in turn had a lot of children, so there are hundreds and hundredsof Knechtels decendents in Canada and some have moved to the United States: Pittsburgh, Pa, Detroit, Mi, Los Angeles,Ca. and the Kansas area. Nowadays the Canadian Knechtels have a reunion each year in Ontario (in the Waterloo/Stratford., Ontario area).
