About Johann Ludwig Reinhardt Wysong

Note about birthdate

Some web trees, and indeed the plaque referenced by this profile, have Ludwig being born in 1684, but not having his first child until 1738, and living to be 106 years old. This, shall we say, is unrealistic. A birthdate of 1717 comes from the immigration record, and is far more consistent with starting a family in 1738. I suggest that 1684 represents the birthdate of his father, not him.

Immigration

Said to have come to America on the ship Friendship from Rotterdam, arriving 23 Sept 1740, but since he is also said to have had a child born in Pennsylvania in 1738, either he immigrated earlier (1738 aboard the "St. Andrew" suggested below), or he in fact married in France before emigrating. I've chosen the latter date since it's better supported by the records, and since Ludwig's brothers all arrived at about the same time.

Emigrated from Alsace, France; his birth name was originally spelled Lodawick Weissang.

FindAGrave

Family History says he was born in Strasbourg, Alsace Lorraine, Germany/France.

His name was originally "Lodowick Wiessang" from the German word Wissage for "Prophet", but was then Americanized after his immigration.

It is believed he emigrated to Wales and then in 1738 came Philadelphia on board the ship
"St. Andrew", using the name "Lewis Vinsent"

(A conflicting account says he emigrated in 1740 to Philadelphia via Rotterdam on the ship "Friendship".)

He settled in Manchester Township, Lancaster County until 1749 when it became part of the then newly-created York County.

He married Mary Susan Hammer in York County, PA.

He was the Father of 11 children; 1. Maria (1738- ?) M: George Boardman 2. Susan Catherine (10/Jan/1740- ?) 3. Johan Ludwig, (1743-1808) [#19884967], 4. Valantine Irvine (1744-1824), 5. Joseph (1745- ?) 6. Henry (1747- ?) M:Catherine Dodd 7. Feidt "Fayette" (1752-1837) [#53873878], 8. Elizabeth, 9. Franey (1753- ?) M:James Davis 10. Catherine (1754- ?) M:Henry Hattman 11. Jacob (1757-1823) M:Mary Byers, 12. Anna Maira

Ludwig and 5 of his boys (John Lewis, Valentine, Joseph, Jacob, and Feidt) faught in the American Revolutionary War, possibly with the 1783 Continental Army 4th Co., 3rd Battn under Col. Jamison, York County Militia under Capt. Christopher Lowman. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LCVR-62T https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/69632424/ludwig-vincent-wysong
