NOTES: "Research notes of Joan M. Luckett, Mrs. Avery Boucher. The Mayfield Family & Allied Lines by J. Hoyle Mayfield, p 165. The Lucketts of Portobacco by Harry Wright Newman. Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate by H.W. Newman. Maryland Calendar of Wills, p 30. IGI Parisha Records. The Register Book of Christening, Marriages, & Burials in the Parish of St. Paul, without the wall of the city of Canterbury, 1562-1800, edited by Joseph M. Cowper, p 18.

About 1662, her husband, John Nevill, filed a suit in the court against Thomas Baker, claiming that he had defamed her in a gross manner. She was accused of being a whore, who gave herself to William Robinson. Robinson then told of this incident at a tavern in front of several people, including Baker. Among the witnesses of this case were Thomas Hussey and his wife, Elizabeth, called by the defendant, Thomas Baker. It was learned that Baker had a grudge against Nevill from earlier years. The court found Baker had maliciously defamed Nevill and his wife. He was ordered to ask forgiviness in open court on bent knees, and pay court cost. John Nevill and his wife too asked Baker for forgiveness of God. Another neighborhood fight broke out in 1663, when "Goodie Nevill" supposedly gave a devil horn finger sign to another woman. She also stated this woman was the whore of Captain Batten. This melee was limited to the women. Johanna lost the suit, and had to pay out 5 goats."

  • If* she married Thomas Hussey, it would have been after John Nevill(e) died in 1664/5 and Hussey also was a widower. She *might* still be of childbearing age, but it would have been getting iffy, given the birth date ascribed to her.

Johanna Porter was born in England about 1627; she was a witness in a court case in 1661 where she gave her age as 34. Charles County Court Proceedings, Liber A. p. 142.

In 1651 she was transported to Maryland by her husband, John Neville as his second wife. According to the Society of the Ark and the Dove Adventurers, Johanna had an illegitimate child in 1658 named Rachel, claiming a lawsuit confirms this; however, the lawsuit is a defamation suit against Johanna, referred to as 'Goodie Neville' which has nothing to do with an illegitimate child of Johanna Neville.

The father of Rachel is unknown. This is confirmed by a lawsuit detailed in Archives, 53:380-382, and Charles Co. Court and Land Records, G:72, when Joanna and her second husband Thomas Hussey on 13 Nov. 1677 gave to Rachel Ashford, "natural daughter of Joannah and wife of Michael Ashford of Charles co., carpenter" a tract on the west side of Zachiah Swamp called Moore's Ditch (Charles Co. Court and Land Records, C:61, G:72.

(John Neville had only two children, both by his first wife Bridget.)[1]

Johanna's husband John Neville died in 1664 and in Aug 1666 she married Thomas Hussey. They had two daughters:

  1. Elizabeth Hussey (1667-1747), m. Samuel Luckett
  2. Mary Hussey (c. 1669- )
