About Johanna Mouw

Mrs. Johanna Van Surksum died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Bloemendaal, and family, three miles north of Alton, at the age of 71 years, two weeks.

She had been suffering for a month from pleurisy.

Mrs. Van Surksum, who was born in the Netherlands in 1861, coming to this country as a girl and being united in marriage to Gerrit Van Surksum, is survived by nine children, as follows:

Mrs. John Bothof, Chandler, Minn.; Mrs. Alex Klein, Hospers; Mrs. Peter Prins, Leota, Minn.; Mrs. Bloemendaal; Gerrit Van Surksum of Doon; Henry of Leota; Mrs. Jake Kort of Leota; Cornie of Orange City; and Edward of Alton.

She is survived by six stepchildren, and by a number of brothers and sisters, Cornelius Mouw of Orange City; John Mouw of Leota, Minn., Mrs. Evert De Kraai of California; Mrs. Cornelius Pals of Orange City; Mrs. Henry Roelofs of Lismore, Minn., Walter Van Reulder of Chandler, Minn., and Mrs. Artje Mouw of Los Angeles, California.

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church at Orange City of which she had been, for many years, a member, on Tuesday afternoon, interment taking place at the Orange City cemetery.

Mrs. Van Surksum had undergone an operation Saturday which, it was hoped, would check the pleurisy, but she passed on the following day.

A beloved mother and true friend her presence will be sadly missed by children, her church and by hundreds of friends.

Alton Democrat 1932-12-02.
